Tips for Matching Clothing Color

Color is just one way of expressing yourself in fashion. Develop the ability to make a fashion statement just by understanding the color wheel. Understand the meaning of words, such as complimentary, triad, and monochromatic. Learn to choose the most flattering colors for your own skin tone.

Match Colors to Your Skin Tone
There are two general groups of colors: cool and warm. To simply put it, silver is cool and gold is warm. Check your veins to test whether you're cool or warm- if you're veins are more bluish, then you're cool. If your veins are greenish, then you're warm. Examples of cool colors are based in blues, whereas warm colors have more of a dominant yellow base. By matching your skin tone to your designated colors, your look will be accentuated and your wardrobe will be more flattering.

Monochromatic Colors
Match like with like. Monochromatic colors are different shades of a single color or hue. For example, matching a light blue with a dark blue. This is a simple and safe way to color match.

Complimentary Colors
Use opposite colors to look attractive. For example, orange with blue, yellow with violet, and red with green are examples of colors that contrast or intensify one another. However, too much can prove to be an eyesore, so applying complimentary colors to accessories may be a more favorable look.

Analogous Colors
Apply a more harmonious look with closely related colors. These colors are also considered to be neighbors on the color wheel. Examples are purple with blue or gold, orange, with yellow.

Triad Colors
Apply three colors that are 120 degrees apart on the color wheel. For example, primary colors, like red, blue with yellow are examples of triad colors. A secondary grouping is purple, orange and green. These colors are often loud, so to subdue them, consider applying less intense versions of these shades.

Neutral Colors
Neutral colors are the safest way to match. White, black, gray and brown are examples of neutral colors. These colors look nice on mostly anyone. Black has the most slimming effect. However, you're staying within the safest color palette. You can mix neutrals with other colors which has the ability to highlight other colors.
